BMW M240i B58
After years of producing the successful generation of 35th and 40th generation cars using the N55 engine, BMW has decided that the time has come to say goodbye to this generation.
Therefore, the BMW M240i, 340i, and 440i models had to wait for a powerful engine to be offered in four-cylinder and six-cylinder versions.
In this situation, BMW unveiled a new engine called B58 (m240i b58) , which produced more power and torque despite a small change in engine volume.

The so-called long-rod engines provide more torque at lower revs, but have less traction.
The B58 also has decent fuel consumption and reassuring reliability, while being highly upgradeable (Tuner Friendly) and this could be a good reason to use it in the Toyota Supra A90 and A91. The engine mounted on the Supra has the code “B58B30C”.
Unlike N55, which has an open deck design with a cast iron cylinder, this generation of modular engine is made with a thinner cylinder that has a better potential for heat dissipation, and has the advantage of less wear and tear; But it loses its ability to be machined again.

The BMW linear engine design formula has been repeated this time on the B58 body with a six-cylinder engine. This Twin Scroll Turbocharged engine with direct fuel injection system and volume of 2988 cc uses 24 valves with VANOS electric control.
The electric valve control with variable valve timing causes the torque to improve at low engine speeds, and when the engine speed increases, the engine performance increases significantly by increasing the air flow. BMW calls this technology called VANOS as an exclusive technology for this company. But as far as we know, this technology was used in the E34 engine in the 90s by an additional gear that is used only when the engine speed increases.
In this way, with the increase of oil pressure, it engages the extra gear between the camshaft and the camshaft gear.
Fundamental changes M240i B58 against Pollution
Due to strict environmental protection laws, BMW was forced to make modifications to the structure of the B58 engine in order to comply with these tougher emission laws. Therefore, by redesigning the timing chain and installing a fine particle filter on the engine path, increasing the pressure of the fuel supply system and the integrated manifold, and building the crank seat chamber, the level of pollution production has been reduced to a great extent.
The first option increases the pressure of the fuel system up to 350 bar compared to 200 bar in factory mode, thanks to the high performance fuel pump and injector. This reduces the smoke from combustion and increases the power of the engine.
M240i b58 Turbo
BMW’s tuning ability was able to make BMW a hot and fiery bullet for drag racing. The 3 liter inline B58 engine is surprisingly strong and can handle a lot of power. With engine changes and tuning, relying on equipping a new camshaft, and a heavy fuel and turbocharged system equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission, it has been able to produce up to 1500 horsepower. Let’s not forget that we are dealing with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. This beefed-up engine sits atop a 3,510-pound body that was able to hit 175 mph in just 7.9 seconds during a recent test in Texas.
M240i b58 Suspension
BMW’s four-wheel drive system has been retained, although the BMW’s 8-speed automatic transmission has been upgraded by Pure Drivetrain Solutions . Also, axles and shafts have been optimized to be able to bear such power. Surprisingly, the rear differential of the car remained intact. The best point is related to not manipulating the ECU and accepting all the mentioned changes by the main engine brain, and therefore the Series 2 in question has most of its main features, including the air conditioning system, infotainment system, cruise control, etc.
M2 vs. M240i ; What is difference ?
The new BMW M240i feels not so pleasingly close on paper to its big brother, the M2. Ever since the BMW 2 Series was facelifted and the M235i was replaced by the M240i, we have often asked ourselves why BMW is pushing the M2? The BMW M2 actually has 36 more horsepower.
But the point is that numbers in the world of cars do not represent anything. In addition to having 100 kg more weight compared to M240i, M2 gives the driver a good feeling of being close to the ground due to having larger front and rear subframes (63 and 69 mm wider, respectively).
Its stability and stiffness have increased and the springs of the front and rear parts of the car are lower in height. In terms of appearance, M2 also has a newer appearance due to having side sills and a more advanced rear diffuser and a small spoiler on the trunk.
Conclusion :
BMW M240i B58 is one of the fastest cars made by BMW in its time. Looking at the power of 322 to 382 horsepower and 500 newtons of torque with direct injection fuel system before 2016, it was able to achieve the most complete performance of BMW sports cars and was widely included in the sales program of BMW.
After all these years, buying this car is still justified and can bring the dream of driving a powerful sports car to all generations.
